Sports : Trenton Survives Rocky Start, Blasts Excelsior Springs 9-2

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs made the short trip to Chillicothe to play 4th seeded Excelsior Springs in the Class 3, District 15 semifinal Thursday night, broadcast on Z 101.7 Sports.

Excelsior Springs started quickly in the top of the 1st with a 2 run home run to take an early lead. Excelsior Springs threatened again in the top of the 2nd, putting runners on first and second with no outs after two Lady Bulldog errors.  Mallory Hooyman would settle down, striking out the next batter and forcing the 2nd out of the inning with a pop up to Trump.  Excelsior Springs would get another hit to center to load the bases before Hooyman would force the final out with a fly out to Cassidy Cotton in left field. 

Trenton bounced back in the bottom of the second when Makaila Capeder led off the inning with a double to left field.  Cassidy Cotton drove home Capeder with a one out single to center field and advance to second on the throw home.  Ally Ockenfels singled and then Whitley Richman followed with an RBI single to score Cotton to tie the game at 2.  Both pitchers would then combine to allow only one hit until the bottom of the 5th inning. 

Tosha Wilson singled to left field and with the game tied Madi Trump hit a 2 run home run to right center to take the lead.  Hooyman retired the Tigers in order in the 6th highlighted by a double play to end the inning and Trenton would explode for 5 more runs in the bottom of the 6th.  Cassidy Cotton got the inning started, reaching on an error and would advance to third on a single by Ockenfels.  Lexie Tolson then drove home Cotton with a pinch hit single down the third base line.  A single by Hurley loaded the bases and Tosha Wilson would extend the lead to 7-2 with a 2 RBI single to center.  Trump would come thru again, this time with a 2 RBI double to left field and Trenton led 9-2. Hooyman again worked out of a jam with 2 runners on and no outs in the 7th. 

After a rocky start, Hooyman settled in to allow only 2 runs on 7 hits, walking 0 and striking out 6.  Trump led the offensive attack, going 3-4 with a run and 4 RBI.  Hurley finished 3-4 with a run and SB, Wilson was 2-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI, Ockenfels was 2-3 with a run, Cotton was 1-3 with 2 runs, Capeder was 1-4 with a run, Richman was 1-3 with an RBI and Tolson was 1-1 with an RBI. 

Head Coach John Cowling said, "The game didn't start out very well for us but this group has proven all year that they are fighters who aren't going to give up.  Mallory did a good job of settling down after a difficult start and really changed the game when she worked out of the second inning jam.  That gave us the chance to come back only down 2 and we battled to tie it.  That gave Trump the opportunity to come through for us again with the huge home run.  Then we did what good teams are supposed to do in the 6th and put the game out of reach.  This was a good start to our postseason." 

Trenton will play Cameron in a district championship rematch on Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, with coverage beginning at 10:50 on Z 101.7.
