Sports : Trenton Drops District Semifinal To Savannah, 5-4

The Trenton Lady Bulldog tennis team fell 5-4 to Savannah in a district semifinal played on Monday afternoon. The Lady Savages tipped the scales by winning two of three doubles matches against THS.

The #2 seed Savages and the #3 seed Bulldogs battled tooth and nail through singles play, with Trenton taking wins from Alexis Fender (1-6, 6-3, 7-5 over Morgan Case), Alvynne Villacampa (6-1, 6-4 over Shayna Rosenak), and Hannah Sowder (6-3, 6-1 over Samantha Brown). Savannah matched Trenton with three singles victories, coming from Erin Hirter (6-2, 1-6, 6-1 over Megan Derry), Jenny Cornelius (6-3, 6-2 over Siara Bailey), and Leah Holt (7-5, 7-5 over Hannah Brinser).

In doubles play, Trenton's #1 team of Derry and Fender downed Hirter and Case of Savannah 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. Savannah's #2 team of Rosenak and Cornelius beat Villacampa/Bailey 6-1, 6-0, and at #3 doubles, Brown/Holt beat Sowder/Brinser 6-4, 6-4.

The win moves Savannah into the district championship match against #1 seed Chillicothe on Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Chillicothe blasted Maryville 5-0 in the semifinals on Monday, after Maryville swept Cameron in the first round, 5-0. The winner between the Hornets and Savages will win the District 16 championship and advance into the Class 1 state playoffs.

On Thursday, Trenton ended the regular season, on Senior Night, with a 9-0 loss to Kirksville. The JV fell 8-0 to the visiting Lady Tigers.
