Sports : Trenton Softball Hammers Chillicothe, 10-0

The Trenton Lady Bulldogs played one of their best games of the season on Monday night, receiving five shutout innings from sophomore Daryian Otto, and nine base hits from the offense, in a 10-0 win over Chillicothe at Johnson Field in Trenton.

After both teams were retired without runs scoring over the first 1 1/2 innings, Trenton exploded in the bottom of the second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs to take command of the contest. Makaila Capeder led off the inning with a double, and after a strikeout one batter later, Cassidy Cotton stepped to the plate:

Trenton kept the pressure on the Hornets, with two runs scoring on a wild pitch and a throwing error by the Hornet catcher, making the score 5-0. Madi Trump reached on a walk and came around to score, along with Capeder, on a base hit by Megan Lynch:

After a scoreless third inning, Trenton put Chillicothe in run-rule danger in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Madi Trump providing the big hit:

Trump scored on a grounder to shortstop by Lynch, making the score 10-0. The game ended in one-two-three fashion in the top of the fifth inning, with winning pitcher Daryian Otto finishing the game with back-to-back strikeouts.

Trenton Head Coach John Cowling said there was some strategy involved in giving Otto the start against Chillicothe:

The win sends Trenton into district play with a 14-4 record. Chillicothe falls to a mark of 8-14. Chillicothe will play Excelsior Springs in a first-round district game on Wednesday night at Danner Park in Chillicothe. A win would send the Lady Hornets into a rematch with Trenton, on Thursday afternoon at 4:30, in Class 3, District 15 semifinal action, again from Danner Park. Trenton is seeded #1 for the tournament.

The Trenton JV doubled up Chillicothe, 6-3 on Monday night. McKinley Hurley was the winning pitcher, twirling 2 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings while striking out four.

Whitley Richman started the game and went 1 2/3 innings for the Lady Bulldogs, allowing three runs on one hit and striking out two.

Shayla Woodside led the Lady Bulldogs at the plate with a 2 for 2 game with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. Hannah Kennebeck added a triple with an RBI and a run scored. Mason Hooyman had a double and scored a run. Tenna Roberts had two RBI's. Abby Miller and Roya Cox both had RBI hits, and Katerina Black, Emily Lynch, and Maggie McNabb all scored runs.

The Trenton JV finishes a fantastic season with a record of 8-1-1.
