Sports : Trenton Tennis Loses Tight Match At St. Joseph Benton, 5-4

The Trenton High School varsity singles players were strong on Tuesday afternoon, but the doubles teams could not find the winners circle in three matches, with the host Benton Lady Cardinals rallying for a 5-4 win over THS.

All nine of the varsity matches were very close, with three points scored by Benton's #2 singles player Nicole Bonham representing the fewest amount of games scored by an individual or doubles team in the duel. Benton got the jump on Trenton at #1 singles, with Aubrey Silvey downing Megan Derry, 8-6. Trenton's Alexis Fender beat Benton's Bonham 8-3. The Lady Bulldogs took the lead at #3 singles, with Alvynne Villacampa downing Jaycen Wilson 8-4. The lead expanded to 4-1 with Siara Bailey beating Hayley Spence 8-5, and Hannah Sowder victorious over Destiny Murphy, 8-4. That would be the final match won by the Lady Bulldogs.

The #6 singles match, and all THREE doubles matches, went to Benton by identical 8-6 final scores, as Katherine Brown beat Hannah Brinser at #6 singles.

Fifteen JV matches (10 singles and 5 doubles) were played between Trenton and Benton, with THS going 10-5 over those matches.

Trenton is next in action on Thursday afternoon, playing at Chillicothe against the Lady Hornets at 4 o'clock. The Lady Bulldogs are at Carrollton on Monday, and host Kirksville on Thursday, October 3rd to finish the regular season.
