Judge orders 18-year sentence in girl’s death

(St. Joseph News Press) – Jurors recommended an 18-year prison sentence for the man charged with endangering the welfare of a child, resulting in the death of a 23-month-old girl in August 2014.

Buchanan County Circuit Judge Patrick Robb sentenced Patrick Middlebrook to the 18-year-sentence Monday.

A jury convicted Middlebrook in December for his role in the death of Jaliyah Blackmon at the Oak Ridge apartments. The charged carried a possible sentence of 10 to 30 years in prison.

During the trial, the state presented evidence that the child sustained some 35 injuries, including a violent blow to the head, which resulted in death.

The mother, Jaspera Rainey, was found guilty earlier this month of third-degree assault and awaits sentencing in April.
