(Springfield News-Leader) - Advocates say they were notified Thursday morning that several homeless camps around Springfield were being broken up by city officials. Homeless people were told they had 48 hours to vacate or face trespassing or public camping charges.

Police confirmed that at least three camps were put on 48-hour notice. The camps were located at the 1700 block of West Norton Road, near the intersection of Fort Avenue and College Street, and at James River Freeway and Glenstone Avenue.

Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox reports that the department has been busy with multiple investigations.

January 19 a motorists on U.S. 36 began following a deputy sheriff patrol vehicle at an extremely close and unsafe distance. The deputy stopped the motorists and subsequently arrested Richard Ryan Johnson, 44, Mountain Grove, Missouri for alleged Following too Closely, Improper Signal, and Driving While Suspended. Mr. Johnson was transported to the LCSO and later released on summons.

The prolific guard had 23 points and hit two free throws after getting fouled in the lane to put Mississippi ahead by a point with 13.4 seconds left in a 76-73 victory on Wednesday night.

The North Central Missouri College men took a 91-75 victory over the Graceland junior varsity on Wednesday night at the Ketcham Community Center in Trenton.

The Pirates had 22 points from Terrance Bush and 21 from Demetrius Houston in the victory, improving NCMC's record to 10-12. Caleb Berry had 12 points and six rebounds, with Major Finley and Dylan Swabby both scoring nine, and Antonio Daniels eight (along with a team-high 14 rebounds).

The Hardin-Central Bulldogs claimed the 2015 High School Holiday Hoops Sportsmanship Award in the Boys Division of the 106 team shoot-held recently on the campus of North Central Missouri College in Trenton.

The award was presented to Coach Kenny Layman, Assistant Coach Tom Twyman and the Bulldogs in front of fans and family at a home game in Hardin on Monday night. Presenting the award were five members of the Hoops committee - Ron Dougan, Steve Perry, Don Warren, Mitch Dougan and Steve Maxey.

GAGE PARK, Ill., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Authorities in southwest Chicago launched a murder investigation Thursday after the abrupt discovery of six bodies at a home there belonging to five adults and one child -- all of whom appear to have been stabbed to death, police said.

A concerned co-worker of one of the victims, a woman, telephoned police when she went two days without seeing her. When officers responded to the home, in Gage Park, they found her body along with those of four men and a preteen child, the Chicago Tribune reported.
