Former Trenton football coach and member of Sports Hall of Fame dies

Trenton citizens have received notice about the death Sunday of longtime football coach, Dewey Combs of Joplin who was 87 years old.

Coach Combs won 213 games and four state championships during his 29-year career. This included eight years at THS. While at Trenton, the 1966 Bulldogs went 10-0 and was named the Class M State Champs by the Missouri Sports Writers.

Combs also coached the TJC Men’s Basketball team during his tenure at Trenton and was a classroom teacher at the high school. Upon leaving Trenton, Combs moved to Joplin where he coached 20 years.

Combs other football championships came in 1975, 1980, and 1983 at Parkwood High School. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
