The highway patrol reports a sports utility vehicle overturned last night approximately three miles north of Cameron, claiming the life of one teenager and injuring another.

The state patrol said a passenger, 17-year-old Taylor Mefford of Cameron, was pronounced dead at the scene by the DeKalb County Coroner. The driver of the SUV, 16-year-old Brendan McCarthy of Cameron, received what the patrol called minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Cameron Regional Medical Center.

Authorities report the northbound vehicle failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the west side of Southeast Irwin Road. The SUV then overturned one time partially ejecting the passenger, Miss Mefford. The accident report noted she was not using a safety device. The driver, McCarthy, had his seat belt on.

Vehicle damage in the 9:45 Monday night accident was listed as moderate.

Assisting Highway Patrol troopers were the DeKalb county sheriff’s department and Cameron fire and ambulance.
