American baby’s body found in empty Tijuana lot

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (UPI) — The body of a baby born in the United States has been found in an empty lot in Tijuana, Mexico a week after he was reported missing, officials said Tuesday.

Police were led to the body of 7-month-old Elliot Villalobos by the boy’s mother a week after relatives in Chula Vista, Calif. reported him missing. The body was found 12 miles south of the San Ysidro Port of Entry on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mexican officials are questioning the 20-year old American mother and her 22-year-old Mexican boyfriend, who police said was not the father. The couple, who live in San Diego, have not been charged.

The couple both said the baby died in a fall, according to Mexican officials. Because they were scared about what to do next, the mother wrapped the 7-month-old in blankets and left him in the lot. Police found the body 20 days later.

“What they told us was that their baby died, that they didn’t do anything wrong,” said Lt. Fritz Reber of the Chula Vista Police Department.
